Had to call the gas company out super-early this morning because the house smelled like gas. The gas company had come out around noon on the 14th to purge the lines and get the furnace and stove working, because I had had gas line work done on the house by a friend of mine. Said friend is a general contractor by rural Wisconsin standards (he has a truck with a topper, a toolbox, and a ladder), but technically isn't certified for gas line work. After today, I'm not surprised.

Kinja'd!!!

The guy from the gas company rocks up at 2am with his tools and his detection meter (similar model pictured above). These things work like a Geiger counter: the more noise they make, the more they detect. This guy's model sounded kinda like an 80's or 90's F1 car when it spun up. He's outside the house with the door open when he turned it on, and it started spinning up. It grabbed 2nd and 3rd gear as he walked in, 4th gear as he entered the room with the furnace, and 5th gear when he stuck the nozzle by the furnace plumbing. (Note: the tool doesn't actually have gears, but since it sounded like a tiny electronic F1 car I'm using that to give you a noise reference.) He checked the stove as well, and found a small leak there (3rd gear level), but the furnace was the big show.

Technician goes down into the crawlspace to sort out the plumbing down there, and we can hear his detection meter revving away in the basement through the floor. He pops back out and lets us know what's wrong.

My dumbass buddy (who I paid for moving the lines for me, it was only discounted not a freebie job) left one of the pipe unions in the basement hand-tight... along with the connection at the stove where he put a new flex line in.

The gas company tech said that if his meter reads 0.500, he legally has to evacuate the building. In the basement, it was reading 0.466. He went to the truck, got some wrenches, and tightened up the loose fittings. Solved the problem. Now I've got a new one though: how badly to chew out the buddy that forgot to tighten the fuckin' gas lines.

I wouldn't necessarily chew him out, but I would certainly let him know that he easily could have killed you, and that he really shouldn't do any more gas line work for anybody in the future.

Scary stuff. I wouldn't let your buddy do that kind of work again.

worth a word for sure, but we all know what happens when you let a buddy work on something.

I don't think I'm going to have him do the other work on the house I was planning.

Hey, if it had been a freebie sort of thing I'd just give him shit about it for like 3 months and call it good. But I paid parts + some labor for this. That ain't cool.

Yep. Get wisdom teeth pulled, then Norwalk virus, then almost blow the house up. Rough couple weeks.

Wow... the guy is a jack-of-all-trades. Does gas line work that threatens to blow up the house AND he does dental work that gives you the Norwalk virus.

LOL

I thought they said bad things happen in tens... or hundreds (hundred year war)... or THOUSANDS!!!

In a worst case, 3 down, another 997 to go...
